Arts And Crafts For Kids

01322240037_il-430xn116758689.jpg  You Need More than Left Handed Scissors for Kids Craft Time

You should enjoy the arts and crafts you do with your kids. This is the time when you get to be messy and creative and your kids get to make something out of absolutely nothing. Allowing your kids to use their imagination is very important to their development. Most adults find craft time too difficult to handle. Most adults stress over the mess and the fact that everyone may not get along. Of course, their main worry is whether or not they’ve chosen a craft the kids will enjoy.

They worry about being able to find the right supplies (like left handed scissors). Read on for more tips on how to have a happier craft time.

Don’t freak out!!! Craft time means mess time. Even the crafts you think will be under control are going to be messy. Half the fun is seeing how big a mess the kids can make before clean up time. The finished work of art that you will get to treasure will totally be worth the mess your kids had a blast making. It is easier to just realize the messes are going to happen and move on having fun than stressing about what a mess they will make. Whether you believe it or not your kids are pretty intuitive, they will pick up on that stress and not have a lot of fun either.

Have fun, relax, allow the mess to happen, accept imperfection and you will be happier for it and so will everyone else. Try to give yourself plenty of room for crafting. More space to move around in. Sometimes right and left-handed children working together, like using left-handed scissors, will need a bit more space so they’re not clashing with elbows, etc. When there is enough room, people will feel more relaxed and at ease than if they felt cramped. Crafting is supposed to be fun and relaxing, and if people are feeling cramped by others then you could see some tempers flare. More room cuts down on the chances of kids spilling liquids or things of that nature.

Be prepared for things to spill. You never know, someone will be cutting with those left-handed scissors, and then something gets knocked over and spilled. So just make the effort to remain cool about it. If everyone becomes stressed, then it naturally takes the fun element right out of it. No big deal, grab a rag and soak up the spilled whatever, and then proceed to enjoy the day. We know, maintaining happiness and peace can be challenging. You need to get everything straight and right, as best you can. The key to making craft time a happy time is to prepare for it. All equipment and supplies at the ready – left-handed tools (scissors) for anyone who needs them. Select the right size room. Be sure to have a little more than you think everyone will need. The most important thing is to always have a great time while crafting with your kids.

Craft Projects for Sukkot

Fruits and vegetables are a symbol of Sukkot and the time of harvest, and they are a great focus for creating Sukkot crafts. For this craft project you will need felt in various colors, glue, ribbon, and scissors.
Start by cutting out various fruit shapes for the felt, and remember to use heavy felt. For a lemon cut out a rounded diamond shape from yellow felt, for an orange cut an orange circle and add a small black circle to the top of it, and for an apple cut out a red circle and add a green stem and leaf. Grapes can be made by cutting several small purple or green circles and gluing them onto a larger piece of felt in the shape of a bunch of grapes; add a stem and a leaf and your grapes are complete.
After all of your fruits are complete simply glue them to the ribbon in intervals, and hang this homemade Sukkot craft in your home or your Sukkah.
Corn Wreath
Corn is another traditional symbol of Sukkot and it can be used to make a beautiful wreath; for this project you will need some grapevines, wire, glue, ribbon, and ornamental corn. Start by bending and twisting the vines into a wreath shape; wrap the vines around each other and secure with the wire. Add the corn to the sides, top, bottom, or middle of the wreath using the glue. When the corn has dried tie the ribbon into a bow and glue it on top of the wire to cover the wire. This wreath makes an excellent craft project and decoration for Sukkot.
Sukkah Tapestry
Sukkot is a joyous holiday that can be celebrated by making a tapestry to hang in your sukkah. For this craft project you will need a large sheet or piece of white fabric, paintbrushes, and fabric paint. You may also want to use a pencil to draw the images you intend on painting on the cloth beforehand.
This craft project is fun and personal, and you can paint whatever you like on your tapestry. Some good ideas are the symbols of the four species and fruits and vegetables, but feel free to be creative and use this tapestry as a way to symbolize the meaning of Sukkot to you.

Craft Challenge Week 8: How to Transform Your Old Clothes Using Bleach, Bands And Your Imagination

01322241128_upload.jpgCraft Challenge Week 8: How to Transform your old clothes using bleach, bands and your imagination

Everyone has out dated or old t-shirts kicking around the bottom of the wardrobe never to be seen again, they go to that secret place where odd socks live!

Or maybe like me, you’re a bit of a hippie and can’t afford all the cool clothes from specialist hippie stores or even like my friend you want something funky and different to wear but are male and stuck with choice a.) Plain or b.) Wise cracks about beer or ‘birds’.

Well how about getting your creativity on and transforming your style at the same time.

How?

Bleaching tees!

This is also a great activity to do with kids during summer boredom or to keep the mischievous little monsters busy!!!

What you will need:

A t-shirt
Spray bottle like you get for gardening
Bleach
Big basin of warm water
Decorative Supplies

1.) Gather or make your decoration – for example you can get your kids to gather leaves and twigs or shells and flowers and make this a fun outdoorsy activity or for the more creative you could draw out your own stencil using card and a Stanley knife. If you are not doing this outside make sure you are in a well arrogated room!
2.) Lay out your t-shirt flat (old/new whatever though pre-washed is better) and place an old towel between the front and the back i.e. inside your shirt.
3.) Place your leaves or beads or crisp packets or neat stencils, whatever you are using in a pattern on your t-shirt – remember that when we spray it with bleach it will be the uncovered parts of the t-shirt that form the design.
4.) Fill your spray bottle with a pretty strong solution of bleach ( get all the children to take cover) and carefully spray your shirt – you can spray the whole thing or just a few centimeters around each object depending on what you want your finish image to look like.
5.) Your t-shirt will visibly begin to lighten before your eyes so again leave on the bleach depending on how light you personally want it to go.
6.) Carefully rinse your t-shirt in the basin of water using a stirring stick or rubber gloves.
7.) Hang it up to dry.
8.) You won’t get all the bleach out first go so it’s a good idea to wash the shirt properly and SEPARATELY from other clothes before you wear it.

The designs can be as simple or as complex as you like. Another variation of this is simply to tie dye your t-shirt using bleach – this works similarly except instead of lying out a pattern you pluck the fabric into points, like a hanky and tie rubber bands around these or you can simply roll your shirt up and tie bands around the length of it in intervals to get a stripy look. Remember this works best with darker t-shirts as the color contrast is more definite!

Happy bleaching!
The Results of this Week’s Challenge
Howdy gals and guys! It’s your crazy crafter reporting in!
So doing just that, I have to say that I love this idea. I was bleaching outside in the sun, making a mess and causing water fights AND giving my clothes a cheap face-lift, where’s the negative!

This really is a great craft because even if it goes wrong all its cost you is a 40p bottle of beach and an old t-shirt that you were going to dump anyway and as times are tough at the moment why buy new when you can make new!

For my t-shirt, a purple number from Tesco!!! (With shoulder pads – what’s that about?) I drew out a butterfly stencil in my sketch book, cut it out using a Stanley knife that was less than sharp so that bit did take me quite a while and then cut around it with those funky material scissors that chop in zigzags so as not to fray the fabric (I can’t remember what you actually call them!)

I also cut out to strips and used one of my craft paper punchers to decorate those. Having laid these out on my flat t-shirt I also sprinkled some stars on one side and some shells on the other and put some small pebbles on the design to try to make sure it didn’t move – a more patient and professional person would probably use sand paper to make there stencil or buy adhesive spray.

The result as you can see for a first attempt ain’t half bad and the variety of easy designs is endless. I was thinking about trying laying feathers on the shirt of flowers or leaves, bottle caps, tin can pulls anything.

The only problem I encountered was that I didn’t either 1.) Use enough bleach or 2.) Leave the bleach on long enough to have a sharper contrast but that’s trial and error and I will know for next time.

I also tried tie dying a pair of purple 3/4 length trousers and it works – easy just grab bits of material and stick a rubber band (once you have chased the cat plus rubber band round the house that is) around them and soak. Again I didn’t leave the bleach on long enough so it didn’t really work as the colors were too close but you could see the effect that the bands had and how easy it was to achieve.

Many thanks to all of you who are following this challenge.

How to Sell Crafts By Demonstrating Your Work

f_01322512956_basket002.jpgDo you market your crafts at craft shows? If so, you may have considered doing a demonstration of your craft technique to market your crafts. What are some of the advantages to using craft demonstrations as a craft marketing technique?
Some of the advantages include: You attract attention and traffic to your craft booth which can result in increased sales. You give credibility to your craft line by showing that it is, indeed, handmade.3. You may receive positive publicity or even a fully fledged story about your craft if the right person happens to be in the audience. You educate the public about how your craft and make them feel more comfortable buying from you. You establish a personal connection with your potential customer. People would rather purchase from an individual they’ve established a relationship with as opposed to a faceless company or importer. You can have a helper in the audience take photos of your demonstrations to add to your craft portfolio. Before you decide that demonstrating your jewelry making to the public is the greatest thing since sliced bread, be aware that there are several disadvantages to using this as a craft promotional technique:

It may require you to bring additional equipment with you to shows as if you don’t have enough to carry already! It requires you to tie up some of your booth space for the demonstration which means less space for exhibiting your crafts. You may need to hire an assistant to sell your crafts while you demonstrate. This increases your overhead. Most importantly of all, it keeps you from actively marketing and selling your crafts as you’re tied up with the demonstration. I’ve had crafters tell me that they’ve tested the market by demonstrating their handmade crafts at some shows, while spending the time at other shows actively selling and marketing their crafts Guess which one resulted in more sales! The shows where the jewelry designer actively interacted with customers as a salesperson won out by a significant margin. Does this mean you shouldn’t demonstrate your craft skills at all? Not necessarily. You will need to see what works for YOU. Much of your success will depend on you and how your audience responds to you. Only testing will determine if this is a successful marketing technique for you to add to your arsenal. Here are some suggestions for a successful craft demonstration: Don’t use fancy, technical language when you demonstrate. Keep it simple using only terms that a layperson can understand. No one wants to hear terms that are hard to pronounce and understand. They’ll quickly get bored and head to the next booth. Talk about what makes the piece you’re making so special, again, using simple terms that your audience can understand. Are the materials you’re using unusual? Is the technique an unusual one or one that’s very difficult to perfect? Did you develop a unique technique to make that particular craft item? These are all factors that may make your craft special to your audience. Illustrate with lots of stories to break up the monotony. Customers love a well told story that brings your craft to life! As you demonstrate, give them ideas and suggestions on how to use your craft in their home. Sometimes a simple, practical suggestion for how to put your craft to use is enough to spark a sale. Add some humor to your demonstration! This can loosen up the crowd and make them more receptive to purchasing. Hire an additional assistant to sell your handmade crafts while you’re demonstrating. You can’t afford to ignore customers. Consider demonstrating your craft at your next craft show and find out if this is a craft marketing technique that’s right for you and your business.

More and more people are trawling the net for information on how to start bee keeping (just take a look at all the forum posts and question being asked!) yet it still seems that so many people can’t seem to find any decent information on how to actually start bee keeping and get going in the first place. Sure, there are lots of tips and tricks and what not, but no concrete advice on how to just get started in the first place…This is going to be the center of your spiral.
3. Keep your finger in the center and begin to twist the shirt around your finger. Make sure that the shirt stays flat on the surface. Continue twisting the shirt until it is all wound up. It should be about three to five inches tall.
4. Now you’re going to wrap up your wadded T-shirt with some rubber bands, about three or four should do it. (Make sure you space them out evenly).
5. Go to the kitchen sink, plug the bottom and fill it up with water. Add a decent amount of soda ash to the water. Stir the water for a few minutes and allow the soda ash to mix.
6. Place the shirt in the sink and Leave it submerged in the soda ash solution for about twenty minutes to a half hour. Go find something awesome to do and come back later.
7. When the time is up go back to the kitchen and remove the shirt. Give it a real good twist to squeeze out all of the water. Be sure not to rinse it out.
8. Now, go back to your flat surface and lay down some type of plastic. This is the messy part. In my experience a trash bag works pretty well. Get out your bottles full of dye and start applying it to your shirt. You don’t want any white to show so color in the whole thing. Don’t forget about mixing colors to your desire!
9. Find another trash bag and cover your shirt up for the next 24 hours.
10. After a full day the colors will have stained the shirt. Run the shirt under warm water until the water is clear and all of the excess dye has been rinsed out.
11. Now it is time to remove the rubber bands holding your shirt together and marvel at the masterpiece you have created!
12. Once you’ve rinsed it thoroughly by hand. Place the shirt and only the shirt in the washer for twenty minutes with warm water. After that throw it in the dryer and you now have one awesome shirt that is your own work of art! Now you know how to make a tie-dye shirt and can share this fun with anyone.

Easter Egg Napkin Holder Craft Project

11322243196_thankful-tree-thanksgiving-craft-photo-420-ff1102tablea09.jpgEaster Craft for Kids
This Easter Egg Napkin Holder is perfect to display on your kitchen table during the Easter holiday. It is made out of air drying clay and very durable. The kids can really get into this craft project and display their artistic abilities. Be sure to lay out a plastic tarp or plastic tablecloth for the kids to work on. Clay can be a messy art product and kids know just how to get it everywhere!
To Make an Easter Egg Napkin Holder Craft Project You Will Need:
Poster board or sturdy thick paper
Egg shaped Cookie cutter (optional)
Pencil
Scissors
Air Drying Clay
Butter Knife (Plastic or Metal)
Tooth Picks, pencils, wooden skewers, or clay tools
Rollin pin
Acrylic Paint
Clear Acrylic Spray Paint
To start this craft project first have the kids draw out a simple egg shape on some paper. This egg should be about 6 inches tall and about 4 inches wide.
If you have an egg shaped cookie cutter this size you could use this instead.
Next, cut the Easter Egg shape out with scissors.
Break off a hunk of air drying clay and roll it out to a sheet of clay that is about ½ inch thick. You can use a rolling pin to do this.
Lay the Easter Egg cut out on the clay and trace around it with a toothpick. Repeat this process making two Easter Egg. Cut the shape out with a paring knife or plastic butter knife. Next, cut out a rectangle that is as wide as the base as the Easter Egg and about 3 inches deep. This will be the base of the napkin hold that allows it to stand up.
The kids can carve details in to the two Easter Egg shapes or even add details making three-dimensional pieces out of left over clay. Circles, stripes, squiggles and curly cues are all good shapes.
It is a good idea to make sure the Easter Egg will be standing in the same direction when they are standing up, but that is optional. The Easter Egg should be able to hold your napkins either way.
Once the Easter Egg has received all they’re carving a detail you need to attach them to their base. Score the edge of the base by scratching it with your toothpick. Rub some water over the marks and place the Easter Egg upright. Use your finger to shape it into the clay and really connect it. Repeat this process on the other side.
I like to support the Easter Egg napkin holder while it is drying with a canned good on either side. Wrap your canned food in plastic wrap to keep it clean. You may find that you need to ball up some newspaper and put it in between the two Easter Egg to keep them sanding up right while they dry.
Once you Easter inspired napkin holder is dried let the kids paint it any way they want with acrylic paints. They can glue beads on or paint whatever they want with pastel acrylic paints.
Once the paint has dried take the Easter Egg napkin holder outside and spray it with a thick coat of acrylic spray paint. Let this layer of paint dry and then display it on your kitchen table or counter!
For an added detail to this craft project cut out a piece of felt the same size as the base of the Easter Egg napkin holder. Glue it to the bottom of your napkin holder. This will keep the dried clay from scratching your table. You could also attach those little rubber stoppers meant to hold pictures in place on the wall.

Quick And Easy Sewing Projects For The Novice Seamstress

f_11322242986_t9.jpgDo you remember HomeEc classes? You know the ones where you had to create a pillow or apron. If you do, then you know how a bug can get started. For me, I had been introduced to sewing before this because my older sister went through the class before me, but once I got in that class something took a hold of me and hasn’t let go.

I don’t do as much sewing now as I used to, but I still can be found hunched over the sewing machine late into the night when my daughter (who is 28 and still makes requests) needs a special item for an event. Or, you might find me creating curtains from a shower curtain to match the rest of the bathroom as I recently did for my mother.
This article isn’t about my love for sewing. It’s about being new to sewing and some of the wonderful quick and easy items you can make to get you started. Read on to find out more.
Sewing Basics
The basics of sewing are pretty easy. You will need a sewing machine and know how to operate it and a pattern in most cases. I say “in most cases” because I don’t always use a pattern now. Over the years, I have let my imagination create the pattern for me.
You need to make sure that your sewing machine is right for your abilities. When you are just starting out, you don’t need a machine with so many bells and whistles that you become intimidated. Choose one that has simple instructions and is easy to operate. I get by with a basic Brother 21 stitch machine for all my sewing.
The pattern is the next thing you need to look at when you start out sewing. Many of the pattern companies have realized that HomeEc is no longer taught in schools and have created great easy and simple patterns for the novice home seamstress. Choose one of these to get you going in a style that you like. You will want to read the pattern carefully and if there is anything you don’t understand, don’t hesitate to make use of their toll-free number to ask.

In order to get you started, let’s make one of my favorite gift items for a new home owner. The Plastic Grocery Bag Holder
You will need a kitchen hand towel, thread to match the towel, 1/4 inch satin ribbon (one piece about 3 inches long to create the hanger and one piece 24 inches long to create the bow), and 1/4 inch elastic (two pieces about 6 inches long).
If the towel has a pattern printed on one side but not the other, you will use that as the outside of you plastic grocery bag holder.
Place the towel face down on your work surface. Two inches from the end of the towel on each end is where you will pin your elastic in place. You need to stretch it all the way across the towel and pin it down. Take it to your machine and sew the elastic down with a straight stitch down the center of the elastic piece. Do this for both pieces of elastic.
Fold the towel in half lengthwise and make a seam using your straight stitch down the open side of the towel.
Attach your first piece of ribbon to the top of the towel where you just created the back seam. You can machine sew this or you can hand sew it; just make sure you form a loop with the ribbon to create a hanger.
Once your hanger is done, lay the towel down on your work surface with the seam down the middle of the back. You are looking to find the center of the top of your grocery bag holder so that you can place your decorative ribbon bow there. When you find the center, attach the ribbon to the bag with a few stitches. Tie the bow and you’re done.
Another item that I like to make for new home owners are coasters. You can buy ribbon with embellishments such as beads, feathers, etc to add to squares of felt.
Cut your felt square about three inches by three inches. Pin your ribbon to the square and attach via a straight stitch. You can make these up relatively in an hour and you have a unique gift to give.
For the family who has just had a new baby, I buy plain bibs at the dollar store and add my own embellishments to them. On some I might just add a prettier ribbon and on others adding a embroidered appliqué might be the touch I want.
Pillows are easy to make and stuff with the new pillow forms you can buy at the craft stores. Just cut two pieces of material slightly larger than the pillow form. Place them with the inside of the fabric facing out and stitch all the way around with a straight stitch. Make sure to leave a three inch opening so that you can turn the material and stuff it with the pillow form. Stitch the opening closed with your machine or by hand.
I hope you found some ideas to get you sewing here today.

Flower Crafts: How to Dry Flowers

f_21322512956_dscf3754.jpgIf you love roses and you wish to enjoy these flowers longer, you may turn them into beautiful dried roses. You may dehydrate the flowers with drying crystals. These are called silica gel, is a finely granulated substance which can be bought at craft supply and hobby stores.

To begin drying your roses, fill up a container (such as a plastic shoe box) with an inch-deep even layer of silica gel. Cut the flower’s stem leaving only one inch. Place a multi-pedaled flower face up in the gel. Single-layer pedaled flowers such as daisies must be positioned face down on top of the silica gel. Long-stalk flowers should be laid lengthwise in the container. Buds of roses and peonies must be laid horizontally in the silica gel.

Use a small spoon to scoop the silica crystals to cover the blossoms. Start from the outer parts of the flower and working your way toward the center. Make sure to sprinkle the crystals in between the petals to so the flowers will maintain their shape throughout the drying procedure.

Cover the container with its lid or a sheet of tin foil taped securely in place. Don’t allow the flowers to stay longer than seven days in the silica gel or the petals will turn brittle. You will know if they’re “done” if they feel crisp. If the flowers are still limp, leave them again for a day or two. Gently lift out the flower and shake off the crystals lightly. To display the dried roses or peonies upright, insert the branches onto a florist’s foam. You could also use an egg carton filled with sand and tuck a flower in each cup. To preserve dried flowers during winter, just place them in a storage box with a couple of mothballs and a few spoonfuls of the silica gel to keep bugs and humidity away.
More Tips for Drying Flowers
1. Flowers plucked to be air-dried should be and moisture-free and as perfect as possible.

2. Flowers intended for drying should not be plucked too early in the morning to allow the sun to evaporate the dew first. After which, you may then remove leaves from the stems to facilitate quick drying.

3. The quicker the flowers dry, the better they preserve their colors.

4. Gather flowers in bunches and fasten the stems with elastic bands. Hang the flowers inverted on a hook in a dry area, away from light.

5. Most flowers are most effectively air-dried when hung upside-down.

6. Dried materials can remain hanging at long periods of time, as long as they’re hanging in a dry, area away from moisture and humidity.

7. After the flowers have dried up, arrange them between layers of tissue paper inside cardboard boxes.
